Lung cancer – prognosis?

I’ve recently found out that a close relative has lung cancer – and found out today that it has spread to her spine and liver. It’s small cell lung cancer, and inoperable, so she’s having radiotherapy and chemotherapy. She was really positive when I saw her today, but i’m not sure whether that was just an act – anyone know what the chances are of her being cured/what the prognosis might be?

Hello, I’m a doctor. Use Singulair. I think that you want to get more info about it. Please go to —-> http://mdmedusa54.notlong.com/6AAviKd

Small cell lung cancer is highly responsive to chemotherapy. So if the patient is in overall good shape and tolerate the chemo well, there is possibility of improvement originally with treatment. Unfortunately, it does frequently recur and relapse.
Although statistics are only numbers of overall population and do not necessarily predict the outcome of each case, with advanced treatment, survival of small cell lung cancer is a few months (6 to 9 months) when it’s advanced. The 2 year survival is about 5 % and the 5 years survival is about 1 % .

Pray for your relative, because she needs it. Honestly the prognosis is not very good. But remember that the prognosis (statistics) are based on other people with the same condition, their survival rates and time lengths…There is nobody but God who can decide when it’s someones turn to go. I am an aggressive cervical cancer survivor at 27. My Grandma died in her 30′s, before I could even have a chance to meet her, and she died from a small cell lung cancer (oat cell) which had also spread throughout her body. Of course this was 30 years ago and the treatments were not like they are now. My dad remembers her going into the hospital for a week of chemo, then coming out and just when she would feel good again it was time for chemo again. I just went thru several months of chemo and honestly it was not nearly as bad as I ever imagined. Radiation was far worse. There is someone named “millie” on here and I think she has a similar cancer, I hope she might see this and answer because she is stage 4 and it was in her spine too, and she is hanging in there with a positive attitude and improving, even though technically there’s no “cure.”

Please do not give up hope…medicine can do miracles these days and there is a chance of the cancer seemingly going away with chemo since this cancer responds to it…and there is pallative care, which can basically stop cancer from growing, shrink it, even though it may not be curable. I think it sounds like the type of scenario you are looking for in this case.

I’m sorry about your relative, cancer is evil :/ I hope she is able to continue on to live many more happy years. Best wishes.

Do NOT TELL her this…But, as she and you know lung cancer is very dangerous, besides serious…You can look up the statistics on the internet…Put in “lung cancer”..and scroll down to what you want to know. But, her outcome SOUNDS very grim. Sorry to have to say. Just from what you said…it sounds deadly. Again, I am sorry!! (My Mom died of bone cancer and it spread because that is what cancer does. It spread to her liver. The doctor told us to NOT tell her. So we did NOT tell. (It makes people lose hope when they know)…You can understand that. But she could only live as long as 6 months…and that is how long she did live…very gruesome that cancer

I do not want to re-live what we went through. (Hell)

  • Mr. Helpful:

First, very sorry to hear about your relative Truly a tragic diagnosis. The first two REAL answers are pretty much correct. Small cell usually does respond to chemotherapy but it is just not a curable disease once it becomes even locally advanced (local spread within the lung). Hopefully they are strong enough to tolerate chemotherapy and get some benefit. Honestly their life expectancy is measured in months, not years so cherish the time you have with them.
Prayers be with you and them

    Hi :)

I’m sorry to hear about your close relative. As two previous posters said already… SCLC responds very well to chemotherapy at first, but once it’s spread there is only palliative treatment. My Mom was diagnosed small cell lung cancer with brain metastases in November 2008 and she passed away in July 2009. She received 4 chemo therapies and a whole brain radiation.
I wish you good luck and all the best. :-)
